Gossip's Terrific Twos

In its second season, the guilty pleasure may carry the new CW lineup.
The ratings are heating up for Gossip Girl, the teen drama about a gossip blog that follows the kids at a Manhattan prep school, just in time for it to add buzz to the new lineup the struggling CW network rolls out October 5.
With record-breaking audiences so far this season, the once troubled network now has a bona fide hit on its hands—and a solid shot at generating respectable ratings gains across the network.
"Gossip Girl has hit the opposite of a sophomore slump. It's hitting a sophomore rise," says Jason Maltby, president of national broadcast for MindShare, an ad-buying agency. "That's key, because it's now the flag of the network."

Ads That Generate a Buzz of Their Own

Pictures of pretty blond actress Blake Lively -- in the throes of passion with her dark, chiseled co-star Chace Crawford -- cropped up on billboards in April, sending bloggers and parents into a frenzy at the sexual intimacy on display. What was more shocking: that the two play high school students on "Gossip Girl," the series that the ads were promoting? Or was it the string of letters at the bottom of the ad: "OM[unprintable letter]G"?
Rick Haskins, CW executive vice president of marketing, spearheaded the controversial ad campaign, and the network upped the ante this fall. This season has four new ads featuring different "Gossip Girl" cast members in provocative situations, taken from scenes of the show -- complete with quotes from outraged critics splashed across the photos. Whether or not a shirtless Crawford cradling a lingerie-clad lover twice his age (played by Madchen Amick) is "mind-blowingly inappropriate," Haskins knows one thing: He's got your attention.
We asked Haskins to share how these ads came about.

"Gossip Girl" Cast Gets Dose In Real Life

 The hit TV show "Gossip Girl," which is narrated by a character called "The Gossip Girl," centers around wealthy and sometimes wild New York teens.
Unfortunately, the cast has to deal with a healthy dose of real life gossip off the set, too. Early Show co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez stopped by the set of "Gossip Girl" to chat with the cast while they film their new season in Queens, New York. Rodriguez talked with Blake Lively ("Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants"), who plays Serena van der Woodsen on the show.

OMFGG: Gossip Girl Soundtrack

Atlantic Records has announced the upcoming release of "OMFGG - ORIGINAL MUSIC FEATURED ON GOSSIP GIRL NO. 1," the first companion soundtrack to the hit CW series, "Gossip Girl." The album features an array of tracks from a range of today's most intriguing new artists, including The Virgins, The Republic Tigers, Phantom Planet, The Kills, and The Ting Tings. "OMFGG - ORIGINAL MUSIC FEATURED ON GOSSIP GIRL NO. 1" arrives digitally today, September 2nd -- one day after the hugely anticipated Season 2 premiere of "Gossip Girl." The soundtrack will then arrive in stores everywhere on October 28th.

Gossip Girl Hits Its Target

 Nonstop chatter does a Gossip Girl good.
The CW series, which has seemed to generate more press than viewers, got off to a solid start last night, averaging 3.4 million for its second-season premiere, Nielsen Media Research estimates said.
Overall, a jackpot-hitting Deal or No Deal won the night in so-so fashion, while a new TNT drama debuted in record-setting fashion.
Gossip Girl's performance was on par with last season's opener (3.5 million), up a bit over last May's finale (3 million), and up a lot over its first-season average (2.5 million). ... Read More ...

Art and Life Get Blurred for Gossip Girl Fashion Designer Abigail Lorick

On September 4, former Ford model Abigail Lorick will debut her Spring '09 collection. Ms. Lorick's line, Lorick New York, is the real-life fashion line behind Eleanor Waldorf's fictitious fashion house on Gossip Girl. According to Steven Rojas, a spokesperson for Archetype Showroom (which will be producing Lorick's New York Fashion Week show), Blake Lively, Taylor Momsen, and Leighton Meester have been invited. But it won't be the first time that they'll be seeing Ms. Lorick's latest collection.
Reportedly, a scene for the show was filmed a few weeks ago using Ms. Lorick's Spring '09 designs in Mrs. Waldorf's fictitious Fashion Week show, an episode that will coincidentally air during New York Fashion Week--one week after Lorick's real life runway show. Madchen Amick on Kissing Chace & The GG Cast

The actress, who plays Nate Archibald’s (Chace Crawford) mature and beautiful love interest on Gossip Girl, has a steamy make out scene with the 23-year-old. And that’s just in the first five minutes of the show’s season two premiere! Luckily, she’s not above kissing and telling. “He’s a very good kisser,” Amick, 37, says. “If anyone gets the opportunity to kiss him, he will not disappoint.”

“Everywhere these people go, when they’re filming or going home or going to dinner or whatever, there are masses of fans following them [and] huge crowds of paparazzi. Henri Bendel Bash Attended by Gossip Girl Cast—and Gossip Girl Herself?

 Spotted—also, striped, plaid, and fringed: all said looks were spied Sunday night in a display window at the Henri Bendel flagship on Fifth Avenue. The mannequins, as much as mannequins can be, were less silently bored than articulately, deliberately insouciant: the one on the far left held in her bent left hand a petite Sony Handycam; it was noticeably turned off, and angled at five o'clock, as if the spectators gathered on the sidewalk were obvi(ously) nothing worth committing to tape. Two places to her left, a blond had conjured the year's most fraught sartorial heresy: turquoise thigh-length stockings with color-matched open-toed pumps. As Labor Day nears, of course, every department-store window becomes deeply political, but the Bendel display was something more sinister, something approaching unbridled Nietzschean provocation.
Thigh highs? With heels? Sure, if I were still 15! If my legs were like Taylor Momsen's!
As it turns out, the five-mannequin tableau was the work of Eric Daman, high prophet of heeled hosiery and the costume designer for Gossip Girl. Gossip Girl, you'll recall, is a web log, long ago turned viral, that chronicles the comings and goings of beautiful Upper East Side prep-schoolers; like a tag cloud made flesh, many of its subjects were present under Bendel's center atrium Sunday, August 24, at a celebration for Mr. Daman's achievement with that window. A stylish back-to-school wardrobe needn't break the bank. Gloria Baume, Teen Vogue's fashion director, thinks crafty teens can find a lot for $100 to $250.
Baume suggests mixing preowned items with pieces picked up at mass retailers, which offer cheap version of party dresses often seen on ``Gossip Girl.''
``If you do a little vintage, do a little H&M, do a little Target, especially there's the new Richard Chai collection right now,'' she says of the retailer's latest designer collaboration. ``There's a lot of places out there to buy great things at a budget.''
